Bonding is a very common procedure to improve your smile in several ways. A composite can be used to fill small chips or used in covering the front and chewing surface of a tooth with a veneer. This procedure is very similar to a traditional filling, but it is for cosmetic purposes, not for maintaining tooth functionality.
In most cases, bonding can be completed in a single visit which is a big benefit. During the appointment, the tooth is prepped, creating a surface for the composite to bond to. Once the tooth is prepped, it will be micro-etched. A desensitizing and bonding agent will be applied and cured with an LED light. Now the composite material can be applied and cured. Once completed, the new restoration will be shaped and contoured into the final shape.
Please note, there are limitations with bonding. This type of restoration can be used for only certain types of defects. Also with bonding, the cost is lower than a veneer, but the life span is about five years, where a veneer is typically ten.
